Here you can find our most asked questions, but if you still don’t have your answer, reach out!
Our Hairstyling program is a total of 1400 hours ( as per government requirements). This program runs either 3/4/5 days per week and from 8.30am – 4.30pm daily and lasts between 9/11/14 months. Our Barbering program is 525 hours. This runs over 4 days per week and from 8.30am – 4.30pm daily.
The primary difference is the apprenticeship programs only deal with the practical skills and theory that is needed for the government exams. Whereas the 1400-hour program covers the government exam requirements plus the core skills needed to take on an apprenticeship in a salon or barbershop. It also contains 350 hours of hands on ( supervised) experience in our client salon.
The answer to this really depends on where you see yourself working. Do you see yourself in a salon or barbershop? Do you want to work primarily on women or men? The biggest decider is whether you want to perform chemical services (colour, perm, hi-lights etc) or not. The barber license does not allow you to perform chemical services.
You can achieve a “Red Seal” with the hairstyling license. At this time the barber license is “Journeyman” only.
To gain your Journeyman license in either Hairstyling or Barbering you must complete three things.
- Education (Technical Training).
- Apprenticeship Hours (for hairstyling this is 2900 hours of paid work in a salon, for barbering this is 1450 hours of paid work in a barbershop).
- Government exams ( for hairstyling there are 4 government exams, 2 theory and 2 practical. For barbering there are 2 government exams, 1 theory and 1 practical).
- You must have completed a minimum of Grade 10.
- Be able to provide a copy of your transcripts, or if you are a mature student have an up-to-date resume.
- We need two references ( not work related, more character references).
- A copy of your driver’s license, birth certificate, passport must be provided.
- If English is your second language we will need certified English test results over Level 6 in all 4 parts ( IELTS or CELPIP are accepted).
- If you had any educational documents (IPP, Psycho-educational assessment) at school we will need a copy.
